The sports newspaper The Sun-Gazette has voted this unusual and unprecedented year in the sports world as the story of the year. But no one celebrates the season like we do here at Hoosier State, and no one celebrates the season like White Hall.
The boys' soccer team from Lewisburg won the fourth national championship, the Jersey Shore soccer team reached the AAAA PIAA championship game, Olivia Dorner of South Williamsport won the national championship in girls' tennis, and Hannah Rabb of Warrior Run finished second at the pIAa Golf Championships and second at the national cross country championships, taking home a silver medal. The Warrior's Run girls and Lewisburg boys won the AA state title at a state meeting and won another AA class title with a PiaA cross-country championship.
Canton's Timmy Ward beats Hershey in the PIAA AA Class AA wrestling championship, and the Warrior's Run Girls and Lewisburg Boys win their third state title in four years.
And of course the Indiana High School championship game that inspired the movie "Hoosiers" are playing here, too. MSU also won its first Big Ten championship since 1983 and the first in school history. White was named the Chicago Tribune's Silver Football Winner, which is awarded annually to the Big Ten's best player. He was also honored as one of the best college running backs in college football history and received his second major award as UPI MVP with 10 titles in 1987.
Lucas Oil hosted the men's NCAA tournament Final Four in 2010 and 2015, as well as the Big Ten football tournament that began in 2011. Indianapolis' largest basketball complex also hosts the Indianapolis 500, the Indy 500 and the Indiana State Fair.
The first visiting Super Bowl champion was the Pittsburgh Steelers, who entered the World Series in 1976 and won the Pittsburgh Pirates. The PIAA announced that there would be no swimming and basketball tournaments in the 2016-17 school year due to a so-called "pandemic" at the US Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Minor League baseball canceled all competitions in all leagues, meaning that baseball was the only major league in New York - Penn League - that was canceled for this season.
